The Better Government Association and WBEZ compiled data on every police shooting in suburban Cook County for thirteen years — from January 1, 2005 through December 31, 2017, finding 113 incidents in which 117 people were shot.

A summary of each shooting is listed below, along with a map that details the location of each incident. To track each case, we compiled tens of thousands of pages of public records and conducted more than 100 interviews with police, law enforcement supervisors, elected officials, witnesses to the incidents and many of the individuals who were shot.

Some of the trends we found:

• Nearly 65 percent of those shot were black
• More than 4 in 10 died
• One in four was unarmed

Every police shooting is investigated by the Illinois State Police Public Integrity Task Force. But those state police investigations only examine whether shooting officers violated the law and do not determine whether police violated policies, procedures or best practices. While most of the police shootings appeared to be justified, many raised questions. Attached to the summaries of the shootings are public records from the incidents, including the investigation reports conducted by the Public Integrity Task Force.
